Modern Family

Every family is dysfunctional in its own way, and while there will always be flawed people here on Earth, God’s people can still prevail in difficult circumstances. The Bible clearly tells us how God envisions family (Genesis 1:27-28Genesis 2:23-24Colossians 3:18-21) — and if you haven’t been following the groundwork He’s already laid out, don’t worry, there is hope for you. Family can be complicated but Jesus came to bring light to dark and difficult situations, which means the dysfunction is merely a backdrop for His grace. As bad as things may seem within your family, rest assured that God is still moving and He doesn’t want you to settle for the status quo. Rather, He wants you to strive for the ideal family and life He has for you (Colossians 3:12-14). He’s equipped us to choose compassion toward our family over cold-heartedness and humility over self-centeredness. He calls us to be gentle instead of harsh and to forgive instead of resent. He tells us to be kind instead of mean-spirited/sarcastic, to be patient instead of easily annoyed and, most importantly, to hold it all together with self-sacrificial love.

Points To Ponder

1) What is the foundation holding my family together based on?
2) Who in my life (including my family) can I start practicing the fruits of the Sprit with?
3) Which of the fruits of the Spirit do I need to give more attention to?
